Chhath Ghat Cleaning Begins in Araria, Demand to Open Path to Kosi Stream
Preparations for the Chhath festival are in full swing in Araria, Bihar. The municipal council has initiated the cleaning of various Chhath ghats and the arrangements for access roads. However, several challenges are being encountered during this process.
One significant issue is the lack of water in the ABC canal, which runs through the city, hindering cleaning efforts. The canal is heavily silted and filled with garbage, causing considerable difficulty for workers. The strong odor emanating after cleaning is also causing inconvenience to nearby residents. Deputy Chief Councilor Gautam Sah has assured better cleaning and provision of clean water for devotees, explaining that water has not been released due to ongoing work under the Kosi-Mechi project, leading to silt accumulation.
Another major concern is the closed access path to the Kosi stream Chhath ghat, located behind Araria College. This forces devotees, especially around 400 Mahadalit families, to travel long distances. Local residents have urged the district administration to open the Araria College path for the Chhath festival to facilitate easier access for devotees. Kailash Ram, a local resident, mentioned that before 2017, residents cleaned the Kosi stream through mutual cooperation, but after 2017, the municipal council took over the cleaning and lighting arrangements.
The municipal council team has been cleaning the Kosi canal for the past two days and installing lights on the access roads. Locals believe that opening the Araria College path would greatly benefit Chhath devotees and alleviate difficulties during the puja.
