A significant case of encroachment on canal land has emerged in the Raniganj block of Araria district, Bihar. This encroachment has led to a severe drainage crisis in the area, causing considerable distress to farmers and local residents. Taking serious note of the matter, the Irrigation Department has written an official letter to the Circle Officer (CO) of Raniganj, urging the removal of encroachments and the restoration of proper drainage systems.

According to Irrigation Department officials, illegal constructions and occupations have taken place on canal land at several locations within the Raniganj area. This encroachment is not only obstructing the primary purpose of the canal, which is irrigation, but is also impeding the proper discharge of rainwater and other water sources. This has resulted in waterlogging in low-lying areas, damaging agricultural land and increasing the risk of water entering people's homes.

The department's letter requests the CO to immediately identify the encroachers and remove the encroachments following due legal process. It also advises taking concrete steps to prevent such encroachments in the future. Local residents have also demanded swift action from the administration to resolve the drainage problem and protect their agricultural land. This incident highlights the significant challenge posed by encroachment on government land, necessitating coordination between departments and stringent action for its resolution.
