In a significant change for Bihar schools, the Education Department has altered the holiday schedule for Jitiya (Jivitputrika) fast following persistent demands from female teachers. As per the directive of Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, the Jitiya holiday will now be observed on October 3rd instead of October 5th. Consequently, the previously scheduled holiday for October 5th has been cancelled.

The 2026 holiday calendar of the Bihar Education Department had initially designated October 5th for the Jitiya fast. This caused confusion and dissatisfaction among female teachers, who had been advocating for a change in the holiday date to align with the actual observance of the festival. Teachers argued that Jitiya is a deeply significant festival for women, who undertake a rigorous, waterless fast for the longevity, prosperity, and well-being of their children. Performing school duties around the festival period would have posed considerable difficulty for them.

Applications from teachers regarding this demand had been submitted to the Education Department. The recent order from the Education Minister to change the holiday date is expected to bring significant relief to female teachers. However, there are regional variations in the Jitiya dates across different almanacs, with some suggesting October 3rd for 'Nahay-Khay,' October 4th for the main fast, and October 5th for 'Paran' (breaking the fast).

It is anticipated that this order from the Education Department will clarify the holiday calendar. This decision, made in response to the demands of female teachers, is considered a notable adjustment in the school holiday system.
