250-Year-Old Vam Kali Puja Begins in Bihpur, Bhagalpur
The approximately 250-year-old Vam Kali Puja commenced in Bihpur-Jamalpur Panchayat, Naugachhia sub-division of Bhagalpur district, with the lighting of lamps. The inauguration was accompanied by cultural programs and theatrical performances, drawing a large number of local devotees.
The worship of Maa Vam Kali in Bihpur is deeply rooted in the area's ancient religious and cultural traditions. The puja is performed using special tantric rituals. It is believed that on Diwali night, at midnight, the idol of the Goddess is placed on the altar, after which the formal worship and fair begin. An old folk tale associated with a poor family named Badur Tanti is also popular in the region. Devotees visit the temple to offer sacrifices or perform mundan ceremonies upon the fulfillment of their wishes.
The event saw the presence of BJP leader and Mahant Naval Kishore Das, Puja Committee President Gaurav Sharma, members Ramdeep Mandal, Ashok Kumar Goswami, Dhirendra Ji, and Kunal alias Bhanu Jha, along with hundreds of devotees and local residents from the Bihpur area.
According to the Puja Committee, a Maha Aarti will be held on November 8, 2026, at 5:30 PM, followed by rituals throughout the night. On November 9, a grand procession for idol immersion will be taken out to Thana Ghat Sarovar.
