Fear Grips Nautan Villages Amid Reports of Gandak Barrage Water Release
Villages in Nautan block of West Champaran district are gripped by fear following reports that more water is being released from the Gandak Barrage. Residents in the diara (riverine) areas are scrambling to protect their homes and belongings. Floodwaters have already reached nearly half a dozen villages, including Bhagwanpur, Vishambharpur Chharki, Damka Tola, Bariarpur, and Shivrajpur Harijan Toli, exacerbating the problems for locals.
Villagers expressed concerns that if water levels continue to rise, their homes could be submerged up to the roof. Many families are contemplating setting up tents in safer locations. Flood victims, including Subhash Kumar Nishad, Anjan Kumar Yadav, Raju Kumar Yadav, and Sohan Kumar, reported difficulties in keeping daily necessities safe. Food items are getting wet, and other belongings are being damaged by the water.
According to residents, the administration has not yet made adequate arrangements for boats. People are forced to rely on a few private boats to transport their families and belongings to the Champaran embankment for shelter. They claim that the flood situation is worsening, but relief and rescue efforts are nowhere in sight. Locals are also upset that no administrative vehicle has visited the affected areas to assess the situation, leading to widespread discontent.
