In Garhwa, recent crackdowns on counterfeit, adulterated, and illegal businesses have raised a critical question: will investigative agencies be able to trace these illicit goods back to their supply chains? Over the past year, various operations have revealed a common thread in the seized items, suggesting a pattern of goods entering the district from outside, being stored locally, and then distributed to markets.

In August 2025, under the leadership of then-SDM Sanjay Kumar, approximately 300 kg of spoiled and chemical-laced sweets, reportedly from UP and Bihar, were seized and destroyed. Nearly a year later, between August 25 and September 12, 2026, the food safety department's actions led to the destruction of 410 kg of spoiled, suspicious, or unapproved colored sweets. During this period, fines totaling Rs 1.15 lakh were imposed, and two sweet factories in Shri Banshidhar Nagar were sealed. These operations extended beyond Garhwa city to include Shri Banshidhar Nagar, Ramkanda, Bhandaria, and Bishunpura.

The campaign began on August 25 with inspections of over six establishments in Garhwa city. On August 27, two sweet factories in Shri Banshidhar Nagar were targeted, leading to the destruction of 220 kg of suspicious rasgullas and 10 kg of colored parwal sweets. These factories were fined Rs 50,000 each and sealed. Subsequently, 22 kg of colored sweets were destroyed in Ramkanda, about 50 kg in Bhandaria, and 100 kg of spoiled rasgullas in Bishunpura.

Moving beyond food items, on September 23, 11,800 counterfeit cigarettes and packaging materials were seized from a warehouse in Bhandaria. The FIR indicates an investigation into the alleged use of names mimicking the company's brand and packaging. The trader linked to the warehouse is from Ramanujganj, Chhattisgarh, while the warehouse was in the Bhandaria police station area. Police are now investigating the origin of the cigarettes, their packaging location, and intended distribution.

Garhwa's geographical location, bordering Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, adds complexity to these investigations. It is crucial for agencies to determine the source of the suspicious goods, who sent them, how they entered the district, where they were stored, and which shops received them. Beyond immediate seizures, examining records of wholesalers, distributors, warehouses, and transport routes is essential to uncover the complete supply chain.
