Gayasur Pontoon Bridge Work Begins, Slow Pace Worries Villagers; Demand for Permanent RCC Bridge
Work has commenced on connecting the 924-meter-long pontoon bridge at Gayaspur Ganga Ghat in Bakhtiyarpur block of Patna district. This bridge is expected to ease commuting for people in the Diara region to Samastipur, Vaishali, and other districts. However, local villagers are concerned about the slow pace of work.
According to government records, the pontoon bridge is dismantled on June 15 when the Ganga's water level rises and is re-opened on November 15 after the water level recedes. The contractor has initiated the work as per government guidelines, but locals allege that the progress is very slow. There are fears that it might take one to two months for the bridge to become fully operational.
Social activist Purushottam Kumar has written to the Patna District Magistrate and the Bihar State Bridge Corporation, urging them to expedite the bridge's completion. Manoj Kumar, the head of Hardaspur Diara, stated that the bridge would connect the Diara region to the mainstream, providing better access to education, health, and security services. Boatman Subodh Rai also appealed for the speedy completion of the bridge.
A young man traveling from Sheikhpura to Rupas Mahaji expressed his apprehension about crossing the Ganga by boat with his motorbike, demanding a permanent RCC bridge at Gayaspur. The pontoon bridge, once operational, offers significant relief to students, patients, farmers, ration dealers, and traders, reducing their reliance on boats. MLA Arun Kumar has previously raised the demand for a permanent bridge at Gayaspur during the assembly's monsoon session, and the minister had assured consideration. The MLA has highlighted this as a priority for his five-year tenure.
