A massive traffic jam brought life to a standstill at Safiabad Chowk in Jamalpur, Munger district, on Monday. The gridlock, caused by an overwhelming volume of vehicles and poor traffic management, stretched for hours, forcing many passengers to abandon their vehicles and walk to Jamalpur Railway Station to avoid missing their trains.

Safiabad Chowk is a critical and bustling intersection in Jamalpur, serving as a key hub for traffic from various directions. While the area typically experiences heavy traffic, Monday's situation escalated beyond control. Long queues of vehicles began forming in the morning, quickly extending for several kilometers.

Eyewitnesses and locals reported that haphazard parking and aggressive overtaking by auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, bikes, cars, and commercial vehicles exacerbated the problem. The perceived lack of adequate traffic police presence or their slow response meant that it took hours to bring the situation under control. School children, office commuters, and especially railway passengers were severely affected.

Many passengers shared their frustration, stating that despite leaving home well in advance, they were compelled to rush to the station on foot, carrying their luggage, due to being stuck in the jam. There were also reports of some passengers missing their trains, incurring both financial losses and significant mental distress. This incident highlights critical shortcomings in Jamalpur's traffic management. Despite rapid urbanization and an increase in vehicle numbers, traffic infrastructure and enforcement have not kept pace. Local authorities must address this pressing issue immediately, implementing permanent solutions at key locations like Safiabad Chowk, including deploying more traffic personnel, improving parking facilities, and removing encroachments.
