Kanti (Muzaffarpur): Kanti MLA Ajit Kumar held a crucial review meeting with officials from the Water Resources Department, where he pledged to ensure canal water reaches farmers in the Kanti assembly constituency within one year. The MLA emphasized the need to remove encroachments and develop an action plan for the renovation of dilapidated distributary and sub-distributary canals.

Thousands of farmers in Kanti and Marwan blocks have been facing difficulties in cultivation for years due to insufficient irrigation water from the Tirhut Main Canal. Many distributary and sub-distributary canals originating from the Tirhut Main Canal are gradually losing their existence due to neglect, depriving farmers of irrigation benefits.

The meeting highlighted that the Tirhut Main Canal extends from Jagannathpur RD No. 649 to Pakri Pakohi RD No. 704.35 within the Kanti assembly constituency. The water from the Veerpur distributary, which originates from it, is currently largely confined to the Kanti Thermal Power Plant. Several other branches and irrigation projects, such as Khajuri Minor, Tiwari Tola Sub-distributary, Hardaspur Laghu Nahar, Barkagaon Distributary, Marwan Minor, Jiyan Minor, Madho Chhapra Minor, and Jamala Minor, are also in a dilapidated state or have been neglected. Consequently, canal water is not reaching thousands of acres of agricultural land.

MLA Ajit Kumar made it clear that ensuring water reaches farmers' fields is his top priority. He stated that he would not back down if any struggle was required at any level to achieve this. He also informed that the entire issue would be strongly raised before the government in the next assembly session to secure farmers' rightful claims. Executive Engineer E. Pushkar and other officials from the Water Resources Department were present at the meeting.
