The erosion by the Kosi River has intensified once again in Sirwar Birwar Panchayat, located in Mahishi block of Saharsa district. Following the recent release of water from the Kosi Barrage, the river's water level has receded, leading to severe erosion that has rendered several families homeless. Houses belonging to villagers, including Sitaram Sah, Phulo Yadav, Jaynarayan Yadav, Shyam Yadav, Vino Sharma, and Maheshwari Sharma, have been submerged by the river.

Nitish Kumar, the local mukhiya, has urged the district administration to immediately initiate anti-erosion measures. He has also appealed for government compensation for the displaced families, warning of agitation if their demands are not met. Affected villagers have been advised to submit a list of homeless families and details of their losses to the Mahishi Circle Officer (CO) or the Saharsa District Disaster Management Branch to receive immediate relief such as tarpaulins and rations.

The Water Resources Department needs to contact engineers from the Flood Control and Water Discharge Division (Saharsa/Supaul) to commence anti-erosion work like geo-bags or boulder pitching. As per Disaster Management Department rules, provisions exist for polythene sheets, food aid, and house damage grants when homes are lost to river erosion. The circle administration has been asked to expedite the paperwork for ex-gratia grants/compensation. Residents in other river embankment or erosion-prone areas have also been advised to remain vigilant and seek refuge in safe, elevated locations.
