Cauliflower Prices Plummet in Madhuban Market, Farmers Worried
In Madhuban's Mela Bazar, East Champaran, cauliflower prices have plummeted, causing significant distress among farmers. Due to a bumper harvest and abundant supply in the market, cauliflower is being sold for merely 400 to 600 rupees per quintal, which translates to 4 to 6 rupees per kilogram. Farmers are not receiving a fair price for their hard work, primarily because of the high yield and low local demand.
Farmers report that favorable weather conditions and minimal pest infestation this year led to an excellent cauliflower harvest in both upper and lower regions. However, the market is now flooded with vegetables, while demand remains relatively low, putting immense pressure on prices.
According to market experts, Madhuban's Mela Bazar previously supplied vegetables regularly to Nepal, ensuring substantial consumption. However, the current halt or significant reduction in vegetable exports to Nepal has severely impacted local market demand. The inability to achieve adequate consumption has caused wholesale cauliflower prices to crash, exacerbating farmers' difficulties.
Local farmers like Akhilesh Kushwaha, Sanjay Prasad, Vinod Kumar, and Ramchandra Bhagat shared their plight, stating that in previous years, early demand for cauliflower in this month was robust, with prices reaching up to 100 rupees per kilogram. This year, however, covering production costs has become challenging. Expenses for seeds, fertilizers, harvesting, and transporting cauliflower to the market cannot be met with the current low prices.
Madhuban's Mela Bazar serves as a central hub for vegetable supply to several surrounding districts, including Motihari, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Saran, and Siwan. Despite this, the lack of market demand continues to trouble farmers. They now hope that an increase in demand and improved market consumption in the coming days will lead to a rise in cauliflower prices.
