Muzaffarpur: Floods Wreak Havoc in Sahebganj, Homes Inundated, Children Commute by Boat to School

Dainik Bhaskar1

The rising water level of the Gandak river in Sahebganj block, Muzaffarpur, has led to severe flooding in several areas. Continuous rainfall in the Terai region of Nepal and the Gandak catchment area, coupled with water released from the Valmikinagar Barrage, has caused the river to swell. While the administration claims the 'situation is under control,' the ground reality paints a different picture.

In many panchayats of Sahebganj, roads are completely submerged, homes have been inundated, and numerous families are displaced, forced to seek shelter by the roadside. Boats have become the sole mode of transport for residents. Children are compelled to use boats to reach the main road and attend school. Villagers are also transporting essential goods, cattle fodder, and rations by boat.

In Ward 1 and 2 of Bangra Panchayat, over 100 homes are surrounded by water, and roads leading to inner residences are submerged under 8 to 10 feet of water. In Madhopur Hazari Panchayat, the path to school is under 5-6 feet of water, disrupting children's education. Villager Ranju Raj stated that waterlogging has persisted for two to three days, bringing normal life to a standstill.

Lohar Prasad Yadav and 70-year-old Sushila Devi from Madhopur Hazari expressed concerns about food, water, and shelter. Sushila Devi's home is flooded, and she had to wade through neck-deep water to reach the road. Shankar Rai from Ward 8 also faces similar difficulties, carrying fodder on his head through neck-deep water.

In Shukurchak Pahar village, approximately 40-50 homes have become isolated islands, and the village's girls' primary school is submerged under 3-4 feet of water, halting children's education. Villagers are shifting their belongings to rooftops and preparing to spend nights on their roofs due to the continuously rising water.
