Following the release of 2.24 lakh cusecs of water from the Valmikinagar Barrage in West Champaran on Thursday evening, flood-like conditions have emerged in the Sahebganj block of Muzaffarpur. The water reached the Sahebganj block area on Sunday, causing a rapid rise in the water level of the Gandak River. As a result, water has entered homes in low-lying areas of Ward No. 4 of Madhopur Hazari Panchayat and Wards No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 of Bangra Nizamat Panchayat.

The sudden inundation has created an atmosphere of fear among residents in these low-lying areas. Approximately 70 percent of the agricultural fields in the block are now submerged, raising concerns for farmers. Commute has also been affected in several low-lying areas due to the rapidly spreading water. The lower regions of Roop Chhapra Panchayat are also experiencing flooding. Livestock owners are facing difficulties in keeping their animals safe due to the rising water.

Anil Kumar, Assistant Engineer of the Water Resources Department, stated that the Gandak River's water level is expected to decrease to approximately 1.30 lakh cusecs by Monday. Subsequently, the water will flow through seven panchayats of Sahebganj block towards Rewa. Improvement in the situation is anticipated once the water level recedes. The spread of water has also compounded the problems for people living in temporary shelters. Villagers have urged the administration to increase monitoring in low-lying areas and arrange for relief and rescue operations if necessary.
