Muzaffarpur: Unseasonal Rain Swells Bagmati River, Pontoon Bridge Submerged, Traffic Halted
Unseasonal rainfall has led to a significant rise in the water level of the Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur district, causing concern in rural areas of Aurai and Katra blocks. From Saturday night to Sunday afternoon, the river's water level increased by approximately two to two-and-a-half feet. However, it has reportedly stabilized since Sunday evening. In Kataujha, Aurai, the Bagmati is flowing 10 centimeters above the danger mark.
The rising water has washed away an under-construction bamboo bridge in Madhuban Pratap, Aurai. This bridge had previously been destroyed in floods and was being rebuilt by villagers. Approximately 150 feet of the bridge had been completed before the sudden surge. Additionally, approach roads on both sides of the pontoon bridge over the Bagmati River in Bakuchi, Katra, have been submerged, halting vehicular traffic. Despite the risk, people are still attempting to cross on foot, disrupting the movement of thousands across about a dozen panchayats.
Water from the Bagmati has also reached the Gaighat block area, damaging crops, particularly paddy. Farmers Rajesh Bhagat, Mukesh Kumar, and Shyam Mahto from Bakuchi, Katra, expressed their dismay, noting that last year's late flood also destroyed their paddy crops and delayed Rabi sowing. This year, their fields are waterlogged, and standing crops are submerged, leading to substantial losses.
The temporary iron bridge constructed by the Aurai-Garhan road bridge construction company over the southern branch of the Bagmati in Atrar is also under increased pressure, disrupting construction work. The district administration has been put on high alert, with Circle Officers instructed to remain vigilant. Despite the challenges, there is hope for some relief among villagers as the water level has stabilized since Sunday evening.
