प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के अनुसार, आग सबसे पहले एक कपड़े की दुकान में लगी और फिर तेजी से आसपास की अन्य दुकानों में फैल गई। इनमें किराना दुकान, मिठाई की दुकान और अन्य फुटकर दुकानें शामिल थीं। आग की लपटें इतनी ऊंची उठ रही थीं कि दूर से ही देखी जा सकती थीं, जिससे पूरे इलाके में अफरा-तफरी का माहौल बन गया। स्थानीय लोगों ने अपनी जान जोखिम में डालकर आग बुझाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन आग की तीव्रता के कारण उन्हें पीछे हटना पड़ा।
अग्निशमन विभाग की कई गाड़ियां मौके पर पहुंचीं और घंटों की कड़ी मशक्कत के बाद आग पर काबू पाया जा सका। हालांकि, तब तक अधिकांश दुकानें पूरी तरह से जलकर राख हो चुकी थीं। दुकानदारों का कहना है कि उन्होंने अपना सब कुछ खो दिया है और अब उनके सामने रोजी-रोटी का संकट खड़ा हो गया है। प्रशासन ने नुकसान का आकलन करने के लिए एक टीम गठित की है और पीड़ित दुकानदारों को हर संभव सहायता का आश्वासन दिया है। इस घटना से नवादा बाजार में शोक और मायूसी का माहौल है।
