Patna: Continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Bagmati river in North Bihar and Nepal has led to a significant rise in its water level, once again crossing the danger mark. At the Dubba Ghat gauge station in Piprahi block, Shivhar district, the Bagmati river's danger level is 61.28 meters. The river is currently flowing at 61.33 meters, which is 5 centimeters above the danger mark. This is reported to be the highest water level recorded this season, with the current flowing continuously strong.

The rising water level has caused water to rapidly spread within the embankments and move towards several low-lying areas. Floodwaters have also entered the NDRF camp located at Dubbaghat. Significant erosion has been reported at multiple locations, including Dubbaghat, Piprahi Ghat, Adouri Ghat, and Motnaje. Agricultural lands and standing crops are being affected as portions of farmland are gradually washing away.

The increasing water level and strong currents have heightened concerns among residents of villages situated near the embankments. Erosion is also continuously occurring near pillar number 1 of the Bagmati bridge in Piprahi, with the affected area gradually expanding. Erosion has been reported on both sides of the river, raising concerns for the safety of nearby infrastructure and settlements.

Under the directives of Shivhar District Magistrate Pratibha Rani, the district administration and Bagmati Division teams have been placed on high alert. Work to prevent flooding and strengthen embankments is ongoing. Large stones and sandbags are being used at vulnerable spots to curb erosion. Bagmati Division teams are monitoring the river round-the-clock. Water from the Bagmati river is also rapidly flowing through the Belwa-Minapur link channel with the help of the Belwa Dam, causing concern in nearby areas. The District Magistrate confirmed erosion near both Piprahi and Dubba bridges, with repair work underway on a war footing.
