Dry Drugs Increasing Brain Hemorrhage Risk in Patna? 41 Patients Admitted in 5 Days, IGIMS Begins Research
Patna has witnessed a sudden surge in brain hemorrhage cases. Over the past five days, 29 patients have been admitted to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) alone, while 12 have reached Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). On average, IGIMS is receiving seven to eight new patients daily. A concerning statistic is that approximately one out of every ten brain hemorrhage patients succumbs to the condition.
Doctors report that a significant number of brain hemorrhage patients are addicted to dry drugs. Even individuals without major underlying illnesses are being affected, with dry drug use identified as a key contributing factor. Additionally, uncontrolled blood pressure (BP), diabetes, and thyroid issues are prevalent among other patients. In response, doctors have issued an advisory.
Dr. Manish Mandal, Medical Superintendent at IGIMS, stated that brain hemorrhages are now occurring even in individuals with no prior illnesses. Beyond drug abuse, uncontrolled BP, diabetes, and thyroid are contributing to the rise in cases. He also linked changing lifestyles, medications, and post-COVID side effects to brain hemorrhage.
Dr. Mandal informed that research into this phenomenon has commenced. Preliminary observations suggest that blood vessels, particularly in the brain and heart, have weakened post-COVID. Even slight pressure can cause brain arteries to rupture. He advised individuals without existing conditions to limit physical exertion and improve their diet.
Doctors treating these patients note that their age ranges from 35 to 65 years. They urged people not to discontinue their BP and sugar medications. Special vigilance and regular check-ups are recommended for patients with blood pressure, sugar, and thyroid issues, especially during changing weather. Dr. Sanjay Kumar, a neuro physician at PMCH, reported that PMCH receives eight to ten brain hemorrhage patients daily. Of these, 70% had stopped their BP and sugar medications, while 30% of cases are attributed to excessive dry drug use. He cautioned that cases are expected to rise during the winter and emphasized the need for early precautions.
