Suspected Third Dengue Death in Patna, Family Blames Administration
A third suspected dengue-related death has been reported in Patna, with 23-year-old Manjeet Kumar, a resident of Kamla Nehru Nagar near Buddha Marg, succumbing during treatment at PMCH. According to his family, Manjeet had been suffering from fever for about a month and was admitted to the hospital on Friday after his condition worsened. He passed away late at night. While an official confirmation of dengue as the cause of death is pending, his family noted that his platelet count had dropped severely.
Manjeet's father, Manoj Kapadia, has strongly criticized the municipal corporation and local representatives for the poor sanitation in their locality. He alleges that a large drain behind their house is filled with garbage, and piles of waste accumulate nearby, leading to a significant increase in mosquitoes. Local residents echo these complaints, stating that despite numerous appeals to the municipal corporation and ward councilor, no effective action has been taken. They claim that sanitation workers do not visit regularly, and fogging and anti-larval sprays are not conducted on time.
Residents of Kamla Nehru Nagar assert that this is the second dengue-related death in their area, following the death of 28-year-old Mohammad Khushiyal on September 10, also suspected to be due to dengue, though unconfirmed. They highlight that conditions worsen during the monsoon season, with accumulated garbage and stagnant water contributing to a surge in mosquitoes.
Patna has seen a rise in dengue cases, with the total exceeding 537, including five new cases in the last 24 hours. District Dengue-Malaria Officer Subhash Prasad stated that the period from September to November is considered sensitive for dengue. While the health department claims to be on alert and conducting fever surveys, residents of Kamla Nehru Nagar dispute these claims, saying that on-ground efforts are lacking. Health experts advise immediate medical attention for symptoms such as high fever, joint pain, vomiting, and breathing difficulties.
