A major accident occurred on Sunday at Asiyan (Asiyani) Ghat in Tiyarpara Panchayat, under the Amour block of Purnia district. An old iron bridge over the Parman River suddenly collapsed while an overloaded sand truck was crossing it. As the bridge broke, the heavy truck plunged directly into the deep waters of the swollen Parman River. The incident is reported to have happened around 11:30 AM on Sunday. Fortunately, the driver sensed the danger as the bridge structure crumbled and managed to jump into the river, saving his life.

The accident caused panic in the entire area, with hundreds of villagers gathering along the riverbank. According to eyewitnesses, as the overloaded sand truck reached the middle of the Asiyani Ghat iron bridge, the dilapidated structure could not withstand the excessive weight. With a loud bang, the bridge broke into two parts and fell into the river. The collapse of the bridge has completely blocked the main connecting road from Jalalgarh via Asiyani to Amour. This has severed direct connectivity for dozens of villages on both sides of the river to the block and district headquarters, creating a severe crisis for local residents' commute.

Upon receiving information about the accident, local administration and departmental staff were alerted. Kaleshwar Prasad, Executive Engineer/SDO of the Rural Works Department, stated that a team of departmental technical experts has departed for the accident site. Amour Circle Officer Shamina Khatoon has instructed the SDRF team to immediately reach the spot and take charge of relief and rescue operations.

Enraged villagers protested against the district administration and the construction agency. They alleged that the bridge was decades old and completely dilapidated. About two and a half years ago, approval was given for the construction of a new concrete bridge right next to it, but due to alleged negligence by the contractor and departmental officials, only two pillars of the new bridge have been erected so far. Villagers claim that if the new bridge had been completed on time, this accident could have been avoided. They also raised concerns about illegal sand mining in the area, allegedly with administrative connivance, and the unrestricted movement of heavy overloaded trucks over the dilapidated bridge. Local residents have demanded a high-level inquiry into the alleged neglect of the old bridge's maintenance, failure to stop illegal overloading, and delays in the new bridge's construction. They also sought strict action against the guilty contractor and concerned officials.
