While the Mahananda, Parman, and Kankai rivers in Purnia district are flowing below the danger mark, the rising water level of the Kosi River has created flood-like conditions in the low-lying areas of Kursela block. At 5 AM on Wednesday, the Kosi in Kursela was flowing 5 cm above the danger mark.

The increase in the Kosi's water level has also caused the Vijay Kosi River to swell, affecting seven panchayats in Kursela block: Bhauwa Parbal, Koili Simra Purab, Koili Simra Paschim, Vijay Lalganj, Vijay Mohanpur, and Kamp. Water has entered homes in Bind Toli, Jamaiya Tola, and Sohra Diyara of Bhauwa Parbal panchayat, forcing dozens of families to seek higher ground. Low-lying areas in Koili Simra Purab and Vijay Mohanpur panchayats are also inundated. Sohra Diyara village has become an island, with boats being the only means of transport. Approximately 500-600 people are trapped in their homes and have been risking their lives to travel by boat for the past two days. Villagers stated that if the water continues to rise at this pace, they will have to abandon their homes.

Farmers are also affected by the floods, desperately harvesting their maize and transporting it out by boat. According to farmers, the Vijay Kosi's water level was normal until August 15, but the sudden swelling of the river has submerged animal fodder in the fields, causing significant distress to livestock owners.

The district administration is on high alert. On Wednesday, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit held a review meeting with all district magistrates via video conferencing. The meeting assessed river water levels, embankment conditions, and pre-flood preparations, with officials instructed to remain vigilant. The Mahananda at Dangraha Ghat in Baisi is 1.84 meters below the danger mark, while the water levels of the Kankai and Parman rivers have also decreased by 20 cm and 8 cm, respectively.
