A significant step is being taken to enhance healthcare services in the state. Plans are underway to launch a four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) service by July. Under this new system, doctors will be required to provide a clear reason before referring any patient to another facility. This initiative aims to curb the practice of unnecessarily referring patients to larger hospitals and to ensure better treatment at the local level.

According to health department officials, this move will enable primary and community health centers to provide initial critical care to patients. Previously, even mildly serious cases were often immediately referred to hospitals in major cities, causing financial and mental distress to patients and their families. The introduction of the new ICU service is expected to alleviate these problems.

Officials stated that all concerned hospitals have been instructed to ensure the availability of necessary equipment and trained staff for the ICU. Doctors and paramedical staff will also receive special training in ICU management and critical patient care. The goal is to ensure that qualified doctors and nurses are available in the ICU around the clock.

Another key objective of this initiative is to bring transparency to the healthcare system. Requiring doctors to document the reason for referral will increase accountability and facilitate the review of referral processes. This is expected to improve the state's health system and provide better, quality healthcare services to the general public in their own areas.
