Despite the onset of the Sawan month, farmers in the Amarpur and Shambhuganj blocks of Banka district are facing a severe water crisis for paddy transplantation. Most rivers, ponds, canals, aahars, dams, and water sources of the Jhitka irrigation scheme in the region have completely dried up. Insufficient rainfall and the lack of alternative irrigation methods have prevented farmers from transplanting paddy. Even the nurseries prepared by some farmers are now on the verge of drying, leading to growing concern and anger among the agricultural community.

Addressing this critical issue, educationist and RJD leader Sanjay Chauhan has questioned the state government and the Minor Irrigation Department. He demanded an explanation for the approximate 900 crore rupees reportedly spent by the department, asking why farmers are still struggling for water if such a large sum was invested in irrigation projects. Chauhan emphasized that Amarpur and Shambhuganj are predominantly agricultural areas, with most of the population dependent on farming. He noted that while farmers annually anticipate good harvests, this year's lack of rain and a collapsed irrigation system have put them in dire straits.

He highlighted that small and large rivers, considered lifelines of the region, are dry, village ponds have parched, and even traditional irrigation structures like 'pain', 'aahar', and dams lack water. Schemes like the Jhitka irrigation project are also failing to provide relief, forcing farmers to rely on expensive diesel pumps. Sanjay Chauhan urged the government to immediately formulate a special action plan to restore irrigation facilities in Amarpur and Shambhuganj. He warned of democratic protests if farmers' issues are not resolved promptly. Chauhan alleged that many government announcements regarding irrigation schemes have not translated into ground-level benefits, with numerous projects incomplete or defunct due to poor maintenance. He concluded by stating that fields are cracking and transplanted paddy is turning yellow, raising fears of a significant impact on this year's rice production if immediate solutions are not found.
