Continuous Rain Damages Crops in Araria, Potato, Cauliflower, Paddy Affected
Continuous intermittent rain in Araria district for the past four days, under the influence of Cyclone Arnab, has caused significant damage to crops, raising concerns among farmers. Potato, cauliflower, brinjal, and paddy crops have been severely affected by the unseasonal downpour. Farmers in Narpatganj, Forbesganj, Bhargama, Raniganj, Kursakanta, Sikti, Palasi, and Jokihat blocks are particularly impacted.
Many farmers had taken loans for cultivation, and now, along with crop losses, they are worried about repaying their debts. Vakil Yadav, a farmer from Araria RS, shared that his two-bigha potato crop, for which he took a loan, has turned yellow due to the incessant rain. Brinjal crops are also showing signs of yellowing, and he fears losses amounting to lakhs of rupees. Farmers fear further damage to other standing crops if the weather does not clear soon, which would worsen their financial situation.
However, District Disaster Management Officer Mrityunjay Kumar stated that while the district is experiencing rain and strong winds due to Cyclone Arnab, no casualties have been reported, and the administration has declared the situation as normal. Despite the administration's assessment, farmers are distressed by their ruined crops and are now hoping for official assessment of the damage and relief from the government.
