The problem of encroachment has once again escalated in Bettiah city. The anti-encroachment drives conducted by the municipal and district administrations have shown no lasting impact. On the main roads of the city, especially on the service lanes, the occupation by shopkeepers and hawkers is increasing, turning these lanes into parking spaces. This not only obstructs traffic but also causes significant inconvenience to pedestrians.

Previously, the district administration had taken strict action against encroachers on several occasions. Temporary structures were removed from the roadside, and shopkeepers were warned to stay within their limits. However, these campaigns remained effective only for a few days. As soon as administrative vigilance slackened, encroachers reverted to their old habits. From the main market to other busy areas, illegal occupation of footpaths and service lanes is clearly visible everywhere.

This situation directly impacts the city's traffic management. Service lanes, which are meant for smooth flow of vehicles and providing passage in emergencies, are now completely jammed. Illegally parked vehicles and scattered goods on these lanes slow down traffic, leading to frequent congestion. Pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads, increasing the risk of accidents.

Local residents suggest that the administration should devise a long-term strategy instead of merely conducting drives as a formality. After removing encroachments, there should be regular monitoring and provision for strict penalties so that encroachers do not dare to re-occupy. This issue is becoming a major hindrance to Bettiah's urban development, and concrete and continuous efforts are needed for its resolution.
