Traffic Chaos in Bettiah: Vehicles Crawl on NH, City Junctions Gridlocked
Bettiah's traffic management system has completely collapsed, leaving city residents stuck in hours-long jams. All administrative claims to alleviate the issue have proven ineffective, and traffic congestion has become an incurable problem. Navigating the main roads is a daily struggle for ordinary citizens, schoolchildren, patients, and emergency services.
On Friday, a two-kilometer long traffic jam stretched from the Old LIC Office to Chhawani Chowk, bringing the entire area to a standstill. Hariwatika Chowk, Station Chowk, Old LIC Office, Teen Lalten Chowk, and Hospital Road have become the city's major 'jam hotspots.' The municipal corporation's anti-encroachment drives, traffic police patrols, and loudspeaker warnings have been reduced to mere formalities.
The situation at Station Chowk becomes particularly dire during train arrivals when 100 to 150 tempos and e-rickshaws haphazardly flood the roads. The continuous pressure from heavy vehicles on the National Highway, illegal encroachments, and occupation of service lanes have made it a dangerous point. Large commercial malls and establishments near the Old LIC Office complex lack their own parking, forcing customers to park hundreds of bikes and cars on service lanes and NH shoulders. Roadside vendors further exacerbate the problem.
Hariwatika Chowk experiences heavy traffic from the NH as well as vehicles from the market committee and bus stand. Even a single stopped vehicle can cause miles of congestion, worsened by erratically driven auto-rickshaws. On Hospital Road, due to numerous clinics and pharmacies, patients' vehicles are parked on both sides of the road. The presence of over 500 shops lining the road near the East Vegetable Market gate makes the situation uncontrollable. Residents are forced to endure the scorching sun, dust, and rain while battling traffic.
