Several districts in Bihar are grappling with severe flooding caused by incessant rainfall in the hilly regions of Nepal. The rising water levels of the Gandak and Kosi rivers have exacerbated the situation, affecting approximately one lakh people. More than 10 schools in Bagaha and Supaul have been closed due to waterlogging.

In Bagaha, over 4 lakh cusecs of water were discharged from the Gandak Barrage, marking a record for this season. On Saturday morning, Gandak river water inundated residential areas in Bagaha, West Champaran, submerging around 500 homes for two days. Six villages, including Chakdahwa, Jhandu Tola, Been Toli, and Kanhi Tola, have been cut off from the main road, turning into islands. Affected residents have sought refuge on rooftops and elevated platforms, while boats are being used to evacuate people to safer locations in some areas. The Bagaha-Valmikinagar road is currently submerged under about 4 feet of water.

Supaul district is also facing flood-like conditions in 65 villages. The administration has set up 21 community kitchens for the flood-affected population. To manage water pressure, all 43 gates of the Kosi Barrage and all 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage have been opened.

In Rewahia village, under Chiurahi Panchayat of Madhubani block in Bagaha, around 300 houses are waterlogged. Villagers have been forced to set up tents along the Dhanha-Ratwal main road, facing shortages of food, drinking water, and fodder for their livestock. Local head Vijay Yadav distributed biscuits and jaggery-chura among the affected, and CO Nandlal Ram assured them of plastic sheets. The administration, along with the SSB team, is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.
