Bihar MLC Election: Controversy Erupts Over CCTV Cameras During Vote Counting, Jan Suraj, RJD, Congress Allege Irregularities
A major controversy erupted on Tuesday (October 27, 2026) during the counting of votes for the Bihar Legislative Council's teacher and graduate constituency seats, concerning the absence of CCTV cameras. Candidates from Jan Suraj, RJD, and Congress, including Jan Suraj's Divya Jyoti from the Patna Teacher constituency, have questioned the transparency of the vote counting process.
Divya Jyoti alleged that CCTV cameras were not installed in the counting rooms. She stated that while security arrangements were adequate, the lack of CCTV cameras in the counting rooms raised serious questions, demanding an answer from the Election Commission. She filed a complaint and expressed confidence that if the Election Commission remained impartial, the results would favor Jan Suraj.
The RJD has written to the Chief Election Commissioner and Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer, demanding transparent counting in front of CCTV cameras. The party fears that without recording, valid votes could be declared invalid, or opposition votes might be rejected. RJD MLC candidate Dr. Sanjeev questioned why CCTVs are absent when they are used in other elections, while Congress candidate Dr. Sanjay Kumar staged a sit-in protest.
From the Patna Graduate seat, RJD candidate Dilip Patel arrived at the counting center at Bankipur Girls School, alleging preparations for large-scale rigging. He claimed attempts were being made to defeat him despite his winning position, noting that even Panchayat, MLA, and MP elections have CCTV cameras in counting rooms.
However, Patna District Magistrate Kundan Kumar dismissed the allegations, stating that all Election Commission guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) were being strictly followed. He clarified that videography arrangements were in place inside the counting center and that CCTV cameras are not installed inside counting rooms for this particular election. JDU leader Rajiv Ranjan claimed a positive atmosphere, predicting NDA's victory on all eight seats.
