The Bihar government has approved the revival of the Sakri Sugar Mill in Madhubani district, which has been shut for 29 years. The project is estimated to cost around ₹97 crore and will include both sugar and ethanol production. The initiation of ethanol production is expected to expand mill operations and create additional employment opportunities in the region.

To assess the condition of existing machinery and buildings, a departmental team has conducted four inspections this year. Officials are determining which old machinery can be reused and what needs to be removed. Preliminary preparations, such as tree felling and site cleaning, have already begun. Security has also been enhanced, with four security personnel deployed for round-the-clock monitoring of the mill premises.

The reopening of the mill is expected to significantly benefit sugarcane farmers in Madhubani and surrounding areas by providing a local market for their produce. Sugarcane cultivation in the region was adversely affected after the mill's closure, but now farmers will be encouraged to grow sugarcane, potentially increasing cultivation acreage.

The revival will create direct employment for local residents in the mill, as well as indirect job opportunities in transportation, agriculture, and other related activities. The combined production of sugar and ethanol is anticipated to boost the local sugar economy and industrial activities.

The government is also reviewing financial liabilities from before the mill's closure, preparing records for pending provident fund (PF) and salary payments for former employees. An MoU has been signed with Indian Potash Limited (IPL) for this project, which is expected to play a role in the redevelopment and operation of the mill. According to reports, a foundation stone laying ceremony is planned for November 20, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to attend.
