Bihar Sugar Mill Formula Changes: Sugar First, Then Ethanol
Hindustan Biofuel Limited in Sugauli, East Champaran, will no longer produce ethanol directly from sugarcane juice. Instead, sugar will be produced first, and then ethanol will be made from the residual waste materials generated during the sugar manufacturing process. This change aims to address the shortage of sugar and boost its production.
The mill management, acting on government directives, has decided to implement this significant alteration in its production process for the upcoming season. Preparations for the crushing season are in full swing, and according to the management, sugarcane crushing is expected to commence after November 10th. The season will last approximately four months, during which both sugar and ethanol will be produced.
This year, sugarcane has been cultivated across approximately 26,000 acres in the district. The mill has set a target to crush 45 lakh quintals of sugarcane this season and is arranging its production accordingly. Hindustan Biofuel Limited typically produces about three thousand quintals of sugar daily, with an ethanol production capacity of 55 to 60 thousand liters per day.
Previously, sugarcane juice was used for both sugar production and direct ethanol manufacturing, diverting a portion of the juice from sugar production. The decision to stop direct ethanol production from sugarcane juice is expected to increase sugar output and help alleviate market shortages. The ethanol produced at the mill is not sold in the open market but is sent directly to Hindustan Petroleum Limited, which then determines its usage. General Manager Ramesh Shukla stated that this is a return to an older method, prompted by the current sugar deficit.
The government aims for all mills to operate for 150 days, a target not met in the last four seasons due to insufficient sugarcane cultivation area. Efforts are underway by both mill management and the government to expand cultivation, including providing free sugarcane seeds to farmers.
