Patna: As the southwest monsoon begins its retreat from parts of northwest India, Bihar is bracing for heavy rainfall, storms, and lightning. The Meteorological Department has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for 19 districts in the state, warning of strong winds and thunderstorms. Over the past 24 hours, intermittent rain has been recorded in approximately 11 districts, including the state capital Patna. While no immediate significant change in temperature is expected, a rise of 2-4 degrees Celsius could follow once the rains subside.

Normal life has been disrupted due to the inclement weather. Traffic in Patna was affected, and a large tamarind tree falling on NH-31 near Dargahi Tola under Pandarak police station temporarily blocked vehicular movement. There have also been casualties reported from various parts of the state. In Samastipur, two female students died and one person was injured on Thursday when a tree fell during a storm. In Banka, a woman died on Wednesday night after a dilapidated wall collapsed due to heavy rain.

The water level of the Kosi River is expected to rise significantly following continuous heavy rainfall in Nepal's Terai region. The Water Resources Department has put engineers and officials associated with the Kosi basin on high alert, with large volumes of water also anticipated to be released from the Kosi Barrage. The administration has advised people to stay indoors during storms and strong winds. Approximately 35 panchayats across Nauhatta, Mahishi, Simri Bakhtiyarpur, and Salkhua blocks have been identified as particularly vulnerable areas. Officials have instructed residents living within embankments and local boatmen to move to safe, higher ground if conditions worsen. People are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to official weather and disaster management advisories.
