Kosi, Kamala, and Bagmati Rivers Wreak Havoc in Darbhanga: Flooding Displaces Residents, Villages Submerged
Darbhanga: Continuous rainfall over the past few days in Bihar and the release of water from Nepal have led to a significant rise in the water levels of the Kosi, Kamala, Gandak, and Bagmati rivers. This has resulted in a flood-like situation in the Kiratpur block of Darbhanga district. Several villages in the Kusheshwar Asthan East block, including Sirnia, Banri, Tarwara, and Bakonia, have been inundated, forcing residents to evacuate to safer, higher ground.
With dozens of homes submerged, villagers are using boats to transport essential belongings and themselves to secure locations. Local resident Sanjay Kumar Sada stated that the continuously rising water levels are creating a serious situation. Transportation within the villages has been disrupted, making it difficult for people to leave their homes. He appealed to the government for assistance, highlighting the lack of means to even reach a hospital. Residents of Itahar, Usri, Ujua Simartoka, and Tilkeshwar panchayats, located east of the Kamala embankment, are living in fear of further flooding, especially concerning medical emergencies.
River water is rapidly spreading into surrounding low-lying areas. Roads in villages such as Itahar, Itahar Pokhar, Chaukiya, and Lakshminia in Itahar Panchayat; Jhajha, Kodra, Kunjbhavan, Simartaika, Gaijori, and Budhiya Sukrati in Ujua Simartoka Panchayat; and Harinahi, Sagardina, Kauniya, and Arrahi in Usri Panchayat are submerged. This has cut off road connectivity for these villages, impacting the movement of approximately 20,000 people. Residents are relying on boats for transportation.
Anchaladhikari (Circle Officer) Prashant Kumar reported that the administration team is continuously inspecting the Kosi embankment and monitoring the situation. He noted that the water level of the Kosi River is now gradually receding, and the administration is maintaining constant vigilance. Floodwaters have also entered the premises of Primary School Itahar Pokhar and Lakshminia, raising concerns about school operations. While there are no immediate reports of crop damage, villagers fear that sustained high water levels could submerge their crops, leading to significant losses for farmers.
