Dehri Railway Overbridge Closed for 3 Years, 5 Months; Hope for December Reopening Amid Public Hardship
Rohtas: The Pali Railway Overbridge in Dehri-on-Sone, Rohtas district, Bihar, constructed 13 years ago at a cost of approximately 31 crore rupees, has been closed for the past 3 years and 5 months. Following severe damage in May 2023, traffic on this 525-meter long, 8.5-meter wide double-lane ROB was completely halted on May 10, 2023. This bridge connects the Dehri-Nasriganj route and was intended to alleviate disruptions caused by railway lines.
According to locals, cracks and structural issues began appearing shortly after its inauguration in 2013, leading to multiple repairs between 2013 and 2022. After the severe damage to the superstructure in May 2023, the railway decided to replace the old superstructure with a new one. East Central Railway sanctioned approximately 13.8 crore rupees for this work.
Initially, the construction was planned to be completed by September 2025, but this deadline was missed. Subsequently, a target was set to open the bridge by March 2026, which also could not be met. By June 2026, the removal of the old structure was completed, and officials aimed to open the bridge by October 2026. However, in September 2026, technical difficulties arose during piling, where water and sand excess created problems beyond 24 meters, necessitating a design modification for nine piles. The railway has now set a new target of December 2026 for the bridge's reopening.
The constantly shifting deadlines have led to frustration among local residents. A local protest regarding the bridge also took place in October 2026. The closure of this bridge for approximately 1246 days has severely impacted farmers, patients, students, and daily commuters from dozens of nearby villages like Nasriganj, Darihat, and Ayarkotha. They are forced to use alternative routes, increasing both travel time and transportation costs.
