Dhamdaha Nagar Panchayat Row Deepens: 21 Councillors Refute Allegations, Vow to Continue Development
A simmering dispute over alleged irregularities in Dhamdaha Nagar Panchayat has now clearly divided into two factions. On one side, Engineer Kundan Ranjan alias Chunna Thakur and Ward Councillor Anupam Devi have been on an indefinite hunger strike since October 2nd at Ward 17 Kali Mandir premises, demanding action against the alleged malpractices. On the other side, the Chief Councillor, Deputy Chief Councillor, and 21 out of 23 councillors held a press conference, dismissing the allegations made by the protestors as baseless.
The 21 councillors collectively stated that the development works of the Nagar Panchayat would not be halted under any circumstances. They claim that allegations regarding the functioning and development schemes of the Nagar Panchayat have been continuously made for the past two to two-and-a-half years, impacting the town's progress. This is why, for the first time, the elected representatives of the Nagar Panchayat have united to present their side.
Led by Chief Councillor Rani Devi, the press conference included Chief Councillor Rani Devi, Deputy Chief Councillor Meena Kumari, Councillors Vinay Singh, Mohd. Shamsuddin, and Standing Committee members Vijay Sah, Deepak Kumar, and Jitendra Singh, among 21 others. They affirmed that all representatives are united on the issue of urban development and will not allow those aiming to obstruct development work to succeed.
Deputy Chief Councillor Meena Kumari dismissed all allegations as unfounded, stating their objective is to impede ongoing development. Regarding the alleged scam of over 100 crore rupees, the councillors clarified that the Nagar Panchayat received only 25.6 crore rupees in total over the last four years. Of this, 7.5 crore rupees remain in the account, while approximately 18 crore rupees were spent: 7 crore rupees on purchases via the GeM portal, 5 crore rupees on various schemes, and 6 crore rupees on sanitation and staff salaries. The councillors asserted that purchases through the GeM portal and staff recruitment followed prescribed rules. Holding tax collection was also stated to be in accordance with regulations. Members of the Standing Committee also questioned the ongoing protest regarding the housing scheme, terming it an attempt to obstruct development.
