An Excise Intelligence Bureau (EIB) constable, Ajit Kumar, was killed in a firing incident by liquor smugglers in the Pawapuri police station area of Nalanda district, Bihar. The incident occurred when a Patna-headquartered EIB team was pursuing a pickup truck loaded with illicit liquor. Smugglers and their 'liner' (spotter) suddenly opened fire on the team, critically injuring Constable Ajit Kumar.

He was immediately rushed to Bhagwan Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences in Pawapuri, and then referred to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) due to his critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The incident has caused a stir among the police and excise departments, with intensive raids underway to apprehend the attackers.

Excise Superintendent Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed the incident, stating that the Patna EIB team had received intelligence about a large consignment of liquor entering Nalanda district via a pickup truck, moving towards Nalanda via Kharat Mor. Based on this information, the EIB team, along with a sub-inspector from the Rajgir Excise Department and local police, set up a blockade. Near a flyover on the highway in the Pawapuri-Silao area, as the team attempted to intercept the suspicious pickup, a liner suddenly opened fire. The bullet struck Ajit Kumar, who collapsed on the spot. The smugglers used the chaos to escape with the pickup van.

The body of Constable Ajit Kumar is being post-mortemed in Patna. His death has deeply saddened personnel across the police and excise departments. Excise Station House Officer Nitish Kumar stated that the operation was a joint effort led by the special EIB team from Patna. Following the incident, teams from the excise department and local district police are working to identify and arrest the attackers. Raids are being conducted at suspected hideouts, and stringent roadblocks have been put in place on highways and surrounding routes. Police are also investigating the origin of the liquor consignment and the individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
