Gaya Farmer Cultivates 'Kala Namak' Rice, Sells for ₹20,000 per Quintal
Gaya: The cultivation of 'Kala Namak' paddy is rapidly gaining popularity in Matihani, Gaya district, Bihar. This variety has become a focal point for local farmers due to its unique aroma, excellent taste, and high market price of ₹20,000 per quintal. It is also known as 'Buddha Rice' or the sacred offering of Lord Buddha.
Brijendra Chaubey, a progressive farmer who also runs a shelter for Gir cows in the district, has made 'Kala Namak' paddy cultivation a profitable venture by adopting natural and cow-based farming methods. Experts state that the outer husk of 'Kala Namak' paddy grains is small and dark black, which gives it its name. Rich in nutrients and considered sugar-free, this rice is highly sought after both domestically and internationally.
Chaubey had been experimenting on a small scale for the past two years, but this time he has cultivated it on a large scale, spanning approximately 18 to 20 bighas of land. Currently, the value of this crop is estimated at ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 per acre. He believes that even if this crop does not yield significant financial gains or very high production, it is crucial for human health. According to Brijendra, awareness about this rice is low in Bihar, so he sells it to other states from where it is exported abroad.
Initially, traditional farming methods yielded an average of only 10 quintals per acre. However, by adopting modern techniques, productivity has increased to approximately 15 to 20 quintals per acre. Brijendra notes that hybrid and cross-bred rice varieties are being promoted nowadays, which can lead to diseases. He uses traditional, non-genetically modified seeds obtained from a farmer in Chhattisgarh who preserves such varieties.
According to farmer Brijendra Chaubey, the cost of cultivation is almost zero as no chemical fertilizers or synthetic pesticides are used. He uses cow dung, cow urine, and buttermilk to nourish the crops, which boosts production. Additionally, a special natural tonic made from buttermilk and drumstick leaves is prepared and regularly sprayed on the crops. To protect plants from pests, Brijendra also sprays neem-based enzymes. This natural method primarily improves soil health and provides ample nutrition to earthworms and other beneficial organisms for farming.
