A horrific road accident occurred on Saturday near Bhathwa More under Kuchaikot police station in Gopalganj district. A speeding Scorpio, allegedly laden with alcohol, collided head-on with two young men on a motorcycle. In this tragic incident, 30-year-old Karan Kumar, a resident of Bhojpurwa village under Manjha police station, died on the spot, while 30-year-old Vicky Kumar, a resident of Purani Chowk under Nagar police station, was seriously injured.

Following the accident, cries of distress filled the scene. Local residents immediately informed the police and rushed the injured Vicky Kumar to the Sadar Hospital. After initial treatment, doctors referred him to Gorakhpur for better medical care due to his critical condition.

Upon receiving the news, the families of the deceased and injured were distraught. Immediately after the accident, the Scorpio driver abandoned his vehicle at the scene and fled. Upon receiving information, Kuchaikot police arrived and took control of the situation. The police have seized the damaged Scorpio and brought it to the police station. Authorities are investigating the recovery of alcohol from the vehicle and other aspects of the case.

The station house officer stated that CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being reviewed, and raids are being conducted at possible hideouts to identify and apprehend the absconding driver. The police are also investigating the precise causes of the accident, including high speed, driver negligence, and the alleged presence of alcohol in the Scorpio.

Expressing concern over this tragic incident, 'Helmet Man' Shahid, who runs a road safety campaign, noted the increasing menace of speeding vehicles in the district. He urged young people to compulsorily wear helmets while driving and adhere to speed limits. He also demanded that the district administration and transport department introduce mandatory road safety classes in schools and colleges.
