Harnaul | The Local Body Social Justice Front will launch a signature campaign from October 25 to demand an increase in the reservation limit for Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) and Dalits in panchayat and urban local bodies. This information was provided by Kaushal Kumar, president of the Front and PACS president of Chero Panchayat.

Kumar stated that currently, EBCs receive 20 percent reservation and Dalits receive 17 percent reservation in panchayat and urban local bodies, as per the Panchayat Raj Bill 2006. This bill was formulated based on the 1931 census.

He further added that delimitation is currently underway for the panchayat elections, and a dedicated commission has been formed to determine reservations. This commission will decide reservations based on the Bihar Caste Census 2023. According to the Bihar Caste Census 2023, the population of EBCs was recorded at approximately 38 percent, and that of Dalits at 20 percent. The Front aims to advocate for an increase in reservation limits based on these new census figures.
