Jamalpur, known as the 'Iron City' for 164 years due to Asia's first railway factory, is set to gain a new identity through cleanliness and greenery. The Malda Railway Division is preparing to implement a new system for the disposal of organic waste generated daily at Jamalpur Junction. An automated composting plant will soon be installed within the station premises.

This plant will convert vegetable and fruit peels, leftover food, and leaf plates from the station, eateries, Vande Bharat trains, loco pilot rest houses, and pantry cars into manure. The machine will process this organic waste within 3 to 4 hours. The railway's objective is to prevent open dumping of waste and ensure its effective utilization.

Initially, the produced manure will be used in the railway colony and station gardens. Subsequently, there are plans to make it available to farmers. The Jamalpur Municipal Corporation is also intended to be integrated into this system, establishing a coordinated approach from waste collection to manure sales.

The automated composting plant at the railway station will directly convert organic waste into compost. According to the company, the machine operates at temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius, eliminating issues of foul odor and wastewater. It incorporates internet and artificial intelligence technology, with the company claiming low power consumption.

Currently, station waste is dumped in rear and outer areas, leading to unhygienic conditions and fire incidents near the tracks. The divisional administration has initiated drone surveys to identify such locations. Eight-foot-high boundary walls are being constructed at railway land where external waste is illegally dumped, and these areas will be monitored by CCTV to completely stop illegal dumping. DRM Manish Kumar Gupta stated that Jamalpur will become a model of cleanliness in the future, and this plant will also be a medium for a change in mindset.
