Religious Events Revitalize Fading Folk Arts in Katihar
In an era dominated by digital entertainment, traditional folk arts in Bihar's Katihar district were on the verge of extinction. However, various religious events organized in the Pranpur block are now breathing new life into these dying art forms. Annual programs like Durga Puja, Vishahari Gaan, Rasleela, and Akhand Harinam Sankirtan are not only preserving rural culture and age-old traditions but also providing a strong foundation for employment and livelihood to local artists.
In the Roshna area and surrounding villages within Katihar's Pranpur block, there has been a significant increase in demand for Bhajan singing and Rasleela troupes during Durga Puja. Performances of Rasleela and Akhand Harinam Sankirtan at Durga temples, Vishahari Puja pandals, and Mahayagya venues have become major attractions for devotees. Local rural artists portray mythological characters, bringing religious narratives to life with full dedication.
These programs, based on Krishna Leela, Vishahari Bangla dance, Shiva Leela, and devotional sagas, offer healthy entertainment to audiences while also connecting them with their cultural and religious roots. The growing popularity of these arts in rural areas has created new opportunities for local art troupes.
Artists Narayan Sah, Yashwant Sah, Dhaneshwar Rishi, Sufal Soren, Philips Singh, Kuldeep Shah, Chedi Sah, and Bablu Mandal shared that they have been performing with their male troupe for the past 8 to 10 years, not just in Bihar but also in neighboring states like West Bengal and Jharkhand. The artists emphasize that they undergo rigorous practice for several days before any play or Rasleela performance. This intense preparation ensures natural dialogue delivery, appropriate expressions for characters, and emotional nuances, allowing the audience to connect directly with the stage.
