The water level in the Kosi River, often referred to as the lifeline of Bihar, is continuously rising. The discharge from the Kosi Barrage has increased significantly, reaching 1.45 lakh cusecs. A notable rise of 39,000 cusecs was recorded in the last 24 hours alone. Officials from the Water Resources Department attribute this surge to incessant rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

This escalating water level at the Kosi Barrage poses a heightened risk of floods in downstream areas. The administration has initiated preparations to manage the potential flood situation, issuing alerts to district magistrates and the disaster management department in affected districts. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and move to safer locations. Surveillance has been intensified in villages situated along the riverbanks, and locals are being informed through loudspeakers.

Teams of engineers from the Water Resources Department are continuously monitoring the barrage. All gates of the barrage have been opened to ensure a smooth flow of water and prevent undue pressure on the structure. This increase in water level remains a significant concern, particularly for regions annually affected by Kosi floods. The meteorological department forecasts heavy rainfall in North Bihar and the Terai regions of Nepal for the next few days, indicating a further potential rise in the Kosi River's water level. The administration urges people to stay calm and contact local authorities in case of any emergency. Disaster relief teams and NDRF units are also on standby.
