POCSO Act Awareness to be Held Monthly in Motihari Schools
Under the 'Bachpan Bachao Abhiyan' (Save Childhood Campaign), POCSO Act awareness programs will be conducted monthly in schools across Motihari district for students from classes one to eight. The initiative aims to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse. As part of this, one male and one female teacher from each school will receive specialized training. These trained educators will then organize a special program once a month to educate children about child safety, their rights, and the provisions of the POCSO Act.
Various creative activities, including street plays, essays, and debate competitions, will be organized to raise awareness among students. During an event held at Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium in Motihari, Justice Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, East Champaran, addressed school principals, emphasizing the critical need to educate children about the POCSO Act. He stressed that children must understand they do not need to remain silent if they face any inappropriate behavior. They should be provided age-appropriate information about body safety, personal boundaries, and identifying safe and unsafe behaviors.
Justice Tripathi highlighted that children often fail to disclose incidents due to fear, hesitation, threats, or social pressure. Similarly, parents sometimes avoid reporting such incidents due to societal stigma and fear for their reputation. This emboldens perpetrators and puts other children at risk. Therefore, it is crucial to assure children that they are not to blame for any inappropriate behavior and encourage them to speak up without fear.
He further advised that children's concerns should be heard patiently, and any complaint should be taken seriously, seeking assistance from relevant authorities and child protection mechanisms if necessary. The success of this campaign will also depend on the active participation of parents alongside schools. Parents and teachers should respond sensitively to sudden changes in a child's behavior, unusual fear, silence, or discomfort towards any individual. Such signs should not be immediately considered proof of a crime, but rather an opportunity to speak calmly with the child and seek appropriate help if needed. District Education Officer Rajan Giri and several other officials and trainers were present at the event.
