Munger's Stone Industry Revived After 16 Years: Thousands to Get Jobs, Rs 25 Crore Annual Revenue Expected
A significant initiative has been undertaken to restart the stone industry in Munger district, which has been shut down for approximately 16 years. The path for stone quarrying, halted since 2010 due to objections from the Forest and Environment Department, has now been cleared. The Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change has de-notified five stone blocks located within the Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary from forest areas.
This decision opens up the possibility of stone quarrying in about 20 hectares. Following this approval, obtained through the efforts of the Secretary of the Mines and Geology Department and the district administration, the process of issuing mining leases will proceed. The District Mining Office will prepare a District Survey Report (DSR), after which the auction process for mining leases will begin. District Magistrate Nikhil Dhanraj stated that the goal is to start the auction process by January 2027.
The revival of the stone industry is expected to generate over Rs 25 crore in annual revenue for the district. Furthermore, the restart of this business, which has been closed for years, is anticipated to provide employment to thousands of laborers in the region, thereby strengthening the local economy.
District Mining Officer Gopal Kumar Singh mentioned that about 16 years ago, stone quarrying was carried out in eight stone blocks in Munger district, including Jamalpur, Shankarpur, Bakarpur, Sikandarpur, Shitalpur, Nauagarhi, Patam, and Pasia Rishikund blocks. While recommendations were made to de-notify all eight, the Forest Department has currently de-notified five: Shankarpur, Bakarpur, Sikandarpur, Shitalpur, and Nauagarhi, covering about 20 hectares.
Efforts are also underway for the remaining three stone blocks, including Jamalpur, to redefine the boundaries of the wildlife sanctuary. If these boundaries are revised, an additional 150 hectares could become available for stone quarrying, potentially expanding the industry's scope in the district.
