Muzaffarpur: Families Block National Highway Demanding Compensation and Action After Students Electrocuted
In Muzaffarpur district, public anger erupted following an incident where students were severely injured due to electrocution from a high-tension wire at Shahbazpur Higher Secondary School, located near Ahiyapur Chowk within the Ahiyapur police station area. Families of the injured girls, along with hundreds of villagers, blocked the main Ahiyapur road, demanding proper treatment and compensation. The blockade led to long queues of vehicles and disrupted traffic.
The incident occurred on October 9, around 10 AM, when students went to the school roof during lunch break. A 11,000-volt high-tension line passing very close to the roof caused current to spread through the wall, electrocuting three girls. They were immediately admitted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment; one student's condition remains critical.
Protesters accused the school management of gross negligence, claiming the school gate was not opened promptly after the accident, nor were available vehicles used to transport the injured girls to the hospital. Villagers had to take the girls to the hospital by auto-rickshaw.
The families are demanding government assistance and compensation for the injured students' better treatment. They have also called for the immediate removal of the 11,000-volt high-tension line above the school to prevent future incidents and ensure children's safety.
The District Program Officer (Establishment) visited the site, assessed the situation, and collected a written complaint from the families. He assured that action would be taken against those found guilty after an investigation and promised all possible help for the girls' treatment and future. Ahiyapur Station House Officer Sharat Kumar stated that the blockade was lifted after discussions with the police and administration, and further action is being pursued.
