Purnea's Jhijhiya Folk Dance to be Performed Before PM Modi on National Unity Day
The rich cultural heritage of Bihar and Mithilanchal, the traditional folk dance 'Jhijhiya', is set to dazzle on the national stage. On October 31st, 'National Unity Day' (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti), 16 folk artists from Purnea will present the captivating Jhijhiya dance before Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a grand national ceremony in Gujarat.
This cultural troupe is led by Vishwajit Kumar Singh, a renowned theatre artist from Purnea Kala Bhawan, who has been honored with the Bihar Kala Award and the National Folk Vid Award. The prestigious event is being organized jointly by the Art and Culture Department of the Gujarat Government and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The East Zone Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata, operating under the Ministry of Culture, has selected a total of 80 folk artists from across Bihar for this national ceremony. The selection of 16 artists from the historic 'Kala Bhawan' in Purnea district headquarters is a matter of great pride for the district and the entire Kosi-Seemanchal region.
Vishwajit Kumar Singh, the director of the troupe, stated that the 16-member team will depart from Purnea for Gujarat on October 20th. The team will report to the venue on October 21st, after which a joint grand rehearsal with artists from various states across the country will commence on October 22nd. On October 31st, the vibrant folk tradition of Bihar, Jhijhiya, will be presented on the main stage before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other esteemed guests.
Jhijhiya is not merely a dance but a festival-dance deeply connected to the folk faith and rituals of Mithila and Seemanchal. Primarily, women and young girls perform this dance during Shardiya Navratri, from Shashti Tithi to Vijayadashami. The most astonishing aspect of this dance is its balance. Dancers place an earthen pot with many holes, containing a lit lamp, on their heads. While dancing to the fast rhythmic beats of dhol, dhaak, shehnai, and flute, the lamp inside the pot must not extinguish. According to folk belief, this ritualistic dance originated in ancient times to appease Goddess Durga and Bhairavi, seeking protection for children and villages from droughts, epidemics, and the evil eye of witches and tantrics.
