Bihar's First 'Mayur Vihar' to be Established in Saharsa's Aran Village for 500+ Peacocks
Bihar's first 'Mayur Vihar' (Peacock Sanctuary) is being developed in Aran village, Saharsa district, to protect over 500 peacocks residing there. The peacocks currently face threats from stray dogs and wild animals. The government has decided to develop this area as a sanctuary for the conservation of the national bird.
According to villagers, about 25-26 years ago, Kari Jha, Arvind Yadav, and Abhinandan Yadav brought a pair of peacocks from Punjab. Their numbers gradually increased to over 500. While villagers do not disturb them, the threat from other animals remains a concern.
In 2016, then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited the site and proposed a peacock sanctuary. Although the project stalled for a while, the district administration and forest department have now expedited efforts. District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar has inspected the site with officials, and a process to identify approximately two acres of government land is underway.
The identified land will be developed with trees and shrubs suitable for the peacocks' natural habitat. A pond will also be constructed to ensure access to water and natural food (insects). Special guards and veterinarians will be deployed for the care of the peacocks within the sanctuary. The Forest Department has been instructed to implement the action plan promptly.
The establishment of this sanctuary in Aran village, located about four kilometers from Saharsa district headquarters, is expected to transform the area into a major tourist destination in Bihar, boosting local tourism.
