A young woman died under suspicious circumstances by hanging herself in Ward No. 5, Kerai Sarapatti, under Bibhutipur police station in Samastipur district. An FIR has been lodged at the local police station, naming her fiancé as the accused.

Station House Officer Sunil Kumar Jha stated that allegations have been made that despite an initial payment of five lakh rupees in cash for the marriage, an additional demand of two lakh rupees and 20 grams of gold was made. The deceased's brother, Navneet Kumar, claims that his 25-year-old sister, Asmita Kumari, took her own life due to alleged mental harassment stemming from this dowry demand.

Asmita's marriage was fixed with Chandan Kumar (26), son of Dev Narayan Mahto, a resident of Ward No. 7, Pachpaika, under Ujiyarpur police station, scheduled for December 4, 2026. Navneet Kumar asserts that five lakh rupees in cash had already been given as a gift after the marriage was arranged. It is alleged that after receiving a railway job appointment letter, Dev Narayan Mahto demanded an additional two lakh rupees and 20 grams of gold. Navneet Kumar also claims that records show Chandan Kumar made video calls and multiple audio calls from another number to Asmita's mobile on the night of the incident. The police have registered the FIR and commenced investigation.
