Saran Farmers Use Mosquito Nets for Cows After Floods
In Bihar's Saran district, livestock farmers in Parsa block are facing a unique challenge even after the floodwaters of the Gandak river have receded. Stagnant water in low-lying areas has led to a significant increase in mosquito populations, severely affecting dairy cattle. To combat this, farmers are now resorting to a novel solution: using custom-made mosquito nets for their cows.
Villages like Banaunta, Pakahiya, Mujauna, and Futani Bazaar in Parsa block are adopting this practice. Despite the floods receding, water remains trapped in various depressions, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes. As evening approaches, swarms of mosquitoes plague the livestock, causing distress to both animals and their owners. Farmers report that conventional mosquito repellent sprays have not provided complete relief, prompting them to seek alternative methods.
Now, after feeding, cows are being placed inside these specially designed mosquito nets to allow them to rest undisturbed by mosquito bites. This innovative approach has led to a surge in orders for tailors in the villages, who are busy stitching nets according to the size of the cattle. Each mosquito net costs between 1500 to 2000 rupees, a significant investment that farmers like Ritesh Kumar Sah and Vicky Kumar are willing to make to protect their valuable livestock.
While this 'jugaad' (innovative fix) offers temporary relief, the long-term solution requires proper drainage of stagnant water and comprehensive mosquito control measures to ensure the well-being of both the villagers and their animals.
