The water level of the Kiul River in Suryagarha block of Lakhisarai district has stabilized since Tuesday night, bringing some relief to farmers in riverside and Diara areas. However, farmers remain concerned as floodwaters have accumulated in their fields, affecting approximately 50 percent of their crops.

The stabilization is attributed to the opening of Farakka Barrage gates, which led to a drop in the Ganga river's water level. This, in turn, halted the continuous rise in the Kiul River's water level in the Suryagarha region, particularly along NH-80 and west of the protective embankment. Farmers consider this halt in the sudden water level increase a significant relief.

Despite this, reaching crops in many areas has become difficult due to the widespread floodwaters. In some fields, boats are the only means of access, forcing farmers to use them to assess submerged and remaining crops. Vegetables like pointed gourd and okra, along with maize and paddy, have been severely impacted. Farmers report that vegetable and maize crops have suffered the most damage. They fear that if water remains stagnant for an extended period, even the surviving crops could be ruined.

While the stable water level offers temporary respite, farmers' worries are far from over. They believe that a subsequent drop in the Kiul River's water level could help save some remaining crops. However, any renewed increase in water levels could expand the damage. Farmers are closely monitoring the Kiul River, with submerged crops remaining a major concern.
