'Vishwaranag Nalanda 2026' Kicks Off at Nalanda University, Emphasizing Asia Connectivity
An initiative to give new direction to the dialogue between India and Asia has begun on the ancient land of knowledge, Nalanda. The two-day 'Vishwaranag Nalanda 2026' commenced at Nalanda University on Wednesday. This year's theme is 'Northeast India and Southeast Asia: Dialogue of Language, Literature, Culture and Art'.
During the inaugural ceremony, experts emphasized that Asia's connectivity should not be limited to trade and physical contact alone, but should also be strengthened through the exchange of languages, knowledge traditions, and cultural heritage. The event is a joint initiative of Vishwaranag Foundation, Rabindranath Tagore University, Bhopal, and Nalanda University.
Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi, Rabindranath Tagore University Chancellor Dr. Santosh Choubey, ICCR Deputy Director General Dr. Rajesh Ranjan, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region K. Srinivas, and keynote speaker Mukul Kanitkar shared their insights. The inauguration included a film based on Nalanda and Vishwaranag, Vedic chanting, and lamp lighting.
Dr. Rajesh Ranjan of ICCR stated that languages from Northeast India, such as Bodo, Assamese, Manipuri, Khasi, and various Naga languages, have long-standing dialogues with languages like Sanskrit, Pali, Burmese, and Thai. He highlighted literature, songs, and student mobility as crucial mediums for cultural relations between countries. Dr. Santosh Choubey emphasized the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) and the need to understand the cultural contributions of languages. Mukul Kanitkar described diversity, knowledge, sacrifice, and inclusivity as the core spirit of Nalanda, advocating for the preservation of diverse knowledge traditions in the era of modern technology.
K. Srinivas, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, termed Northeast India a crucial 'hinge' between India and Southeast Asia. He stated that language is not merely a medium of communication but a carrier of culture, tradition, and ethical values. He connected the 'Act East' policy with cultural contacts, asserting that initiatives like Nalanda can form the basis for future economic development and civilizational dialogue.
