Heavy rainfall in West Champaran district over the past few days has significantly increased concerns among farmers, particularly those who have recently sown paddy. There is a growing fear that their paddy seedlings might be damaged. Following alerts from the meteorological department, continuous rain has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Farmers are worried that if the rains persist, their paddy nurseries will rot, forcing them to undertake a second round of sowing. This would entail additional expenses and labor, posing a significant challenge for farmers already facing financial difficulties. Many have expressed that they had arranged for seeds and fertilizers by taking loans, and now their efforts seem to be in vain.

Agricultural experts suggest that excessive waterlogging during the initial stages of paddy cultivation can be detrimental, as it deprives plants of adequate oxygen, leading to rot. They have advised farmers to ensure proper drainage in their fields, especially where water is accumulating. However, continuous rain is making this task difficult.

Local agricultural department officials have assured farmers that they are monitoring the situation and will provide necessary assistance. They plan to assess the losses and work towards securing compensation from the government. Farmers are currently hoping for the rains to subside to save their crops and livelihoods.
